About the 2010 Walking Festival
Welcome to the Crickhowell Walking Festival website. The 2010 Festival will start on 27th February and finish on 7th March.(At present only the 2009 programme is available as we are in the final stages of planning the 2010 programme.)
In the 2010 programme there are about 60 walks, ranging, as usual, from tough all day treks to easier and general interest walks. The full programme will be on line in December and printed programmes available from CRiC at about the same time.
Email us at walks@crickhowellinfo.org.uk, or phone 01873 811970, if you would like a programme sent to you.
We are raising funds for Help for Heroes and we have a special challenge on Saturday 28th February for anyone willing to raise at least £100 through sponsorship. The walk - which will take place in the wild west of the National Park - will be led by RAF Instructors and will include a visit to a number of aircraft crash sites to pay tribute to those that have lost their lives in the service of our country.
On 5th March we have a talk from world-renowned mountaineer, Doug Scott. He will be talking about his “Life and Hard Times” from his beginnings as a rock climber to conquering the south face of Everest with Dougal Haston. It is fitting that he should be talking about Everest as the mountain is named after Sir George Everest, Surveyor of India, who lived for a time in Crickhowell.
We have a wide programme of Events in parallel to the walking programme for those who want a rest or who have partners out walking and want something else to do. Of course, the volunteers at CRiC will always be on hand to give advice about places to see and things to do in the area.
In the meantime, if you would like to go on a guided walk whilst you are in the area why not try the Brecon Beacons Park Society? They organise walks throughout the year. You can see their programme on http://www.breconbeaconsparksociety.org/.
Crickhowell is situated in the eastern area of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The surrounding area includes the magnificent Black Mountains as well as the valleys of the River Usk and its many tributaries. The result is a wide range of landscapes lending themselves to glorious walking and other outdoor activities.
The Festival is organised by the Crickhowell Resource and Information Centre (CRiC), a charitable organisation based in the centre of Crickhowell. Here you will find the Tourist Information Centre as well as an Internet Café, Art Gallery, Public Toilets and other facilities. CRiC is open from 9am to 5pm during the Festival.
