A tough 4 booter! An ascent of Table Mt., before descending to the Grwyne Fechan via the Beacons Way. Across the valley up to the top of Crug Mawr and then down to the Grwyne Fawr. Ascend Sugar Loaf via Fforest and returning via Llangenny to CRiC. Ascent 5000ft.

The Storey Arms is on the A470 south from Brecon.

A walk along the Taff Trail before crossing to the dramatic Craig Cerrig-gleisiad, then down to the old turnpike road to remote Cwm-du where the BBC’s “Lorna Doone” was filmed. A steady climb onto Fan Frynach to the shoulder of Fan Fawr and back down to Storey Arms. Ascent 2000ft.

A walk along the magnificent north west escarpment of the Black Mountains with a stiff ascent up the Dragon’s Back then along to Rhiw y Fan and Twmpa. Panoramic views over Hay and the Wye valley. Return to Pengenfordd along paths at the foot of the escarpment. Ascent 2500ft.

Take B4558 from Talybont to Pencelli. Just before village (canal bridge) fork left and then first left. Park at the end of the tarmac road.

From the church over fields before ascending a sunken lane onto The Bryn. Along the eastern side of Cwm Oergwm to Fan y Big. Long rolling descent to Llanfrynach followed by a short steep climb and some more fields to the start. Ascent 2500 ft.

Take Llanbedr Rd from Crickhowell for 4 miles. Right at no through road sign.(Brook Cottage on pre-2009 maps).

Diagonally up to Table Mt, turning north for a steep climb up Pen Carreg Calch then fairly level to Pen Allt Mawr. To the col at the head of the valley, returning by the hill wall and Park Wood. Ascent 2800 ft.

The car park is in the field opposite the Dragon’s Head.

A walk around the back of the Sugar Loaf following the Grwyne Fawr stream using the footpaths and lanes on the lower slopes of the mountain. This route will return to Llangenny along various paths on the Llanbedr side of the valley.

A short history of the canal performed in dialogue, music and song by Crickhowell High School pupils. Walk starts and ends at the High School and joins the canal at Llangattock where pupils will entertain on each bridge along the bank before the walk returns to Crickhowell. Song sheets will be available for walkers to join in.

A gentle walk along country lanes before a steep climb onto the hills to the top of Table Mt. Look down on Crickhowell and the Usk Valley and then descend quite sharply down to the village and back to the Red Lion for a cuppa – or something stronger!
