Guide to Walk Grades

  Level of Difficulty   Special Categories
EASY. At low level with no steep climbs and taken at a gentle pace. Never more than half a day. May involve some unmade footpaths.    A walk with a special interest element in it - eg archeology or poetry.
MODERATE. Will seldom have steep climbs, but if they do will be taken at a gentle pace. Could be on the open hills.    A walk for ladies only.
ENERGETIC. Generally will involve two steep climbs on the open hills and will cover a moderate distance at a steady pace. May take most of a day.    Suitable for accompanied children and families.
STRENUOUS. Require fitness and stamina to cope with several steep climbs on the open hills and will cover a long distance at a steady pace. Will definitely last all day.    Suitable for wheelchair users.

VERY STRENUOUS. Only to be attempted by experienced walkers capable of walk long distances on consecutive days or fell runners.    No dogs allowed.

All walks in our normal range are graded by level of difficulty from 1 boot, the easiest to 4 boots the hardest. This year there is one walk - The  Black Mountains "Haute Route Challenge" - and one fell run - walk 14 - which are graded with 5 boots. You must ensure that you have selected the right grade of walk for your level of fitness.
