WALK DETAILS

Meeting Point: Llangattock Quarry Car Park

Grid Ref: SO 208 154

What3Words: catching.spacing.gloom

Time: 10:30 to 13.30

Distance: 3 miles

Ascent: 200 ft

Leader:  Jon Roberts

A photography-focussed high-level traverse of the Llangattock mountainside.  From the car park, we head west on an old tramroad underneath the escarpment, passing the ruins of limekilns and disused quarries where nature has now gained a foothold in the lime-rich soils. As we head to the National Nature Reserve of Craig y Cilau, we will listen for ravens and peregrine falcons, which nest high up in the cliffs. We pass the large cave of Eglwys Faen (stone church), a sanctuary for quarry workers, soldiers and persecuted worshippers in centuries past.  There is very little ascent on this walk, however the path is very narrow in places, so a good head for heights is needed. We will return the same way with plenty of rest stops to admire the view or take photographs. Bring a packed lunch.
