A fine circuit, taking in the highest point in the Black Mountains via lovely ridges. Start by visiting Castell Dinas, the highest Norman castle site in Wales and then climb the aptly-named Dragon's Back ridge to Waun Fach (811m, 2660ft). The way down skirts the head of the beautiful Grwyne Fechan valley to Pen Trumau and then follows an ancient bridleway back to Pengenffordd.
DIRECTIONS TO START
From the front of CRiC, take A40 towards Brecon. After 1½ miles, turn right onto A479 and continue through Tretower and Cwmdu for 6¾ miles towards Talgarth. At the top of the long hill you pass the Dinas Castle Inn on the right. Continue for 400m and turn right up the narrow road for 300m and parking is in the field through a gate on the left.
